Best Time to Visit Sitges
Sitges serves as a meeting point between the Penedès wine region and the Mediterranean Sea. This charming seaside town is known for its mild and sunny microclimate, which boasts more than 300 days of sunshine a year. Before you book your hotel in Sitges, you’ll want to consider a couple of things.
Ultimately, the best time to visit comes down to your preferences and travel budget. Each season offers a unique mix of cultural events and culinary delights, so here’s everything you need to know about visiting Sitges.
Peak Season (June to September)
The peak tourist season in Sitges is ideal for beach enthusiasts and nightlife lovers. This Catalonian town is brimming with fun activities and events during the summer season.
The warm weather and Mediterranean sunshine make it the perfect time to lay out your towel, soak up the sunshine and order sangria on repeat. Must-see events include Sitges Gay Pride in June and the Festa Major in August.
The average temperature is around 25-30°C (77-86°F), and if you want to enjoy the weather with fewer crowds, I’d recommend visiting in early June or late September. The major drawbacks of visiting Sitges during high season are the crowds and higher prices for accommodations.
Shoulder Season (April and May, October)
The shoulder season is considered one of the best times to visit Sitges, especially if you’re interested in sightseeing and relaxation. With mild weather, fewer tourists and lower prices, this is the perfect time to get outdoors and enjoy the quieter beaches.
The temperature averages 18-24°C (64-75°F), offering a pleasant climate. During this season, you can see popular events like the Sitges International Film Festival (October). April, May and October are the best months for couples, families and travellers who prefer a relaxed environment.
Low Season (November to March)
Sitges is one of the best day trips from Barcelona during the summer, but the wintertime has a surprising slew of experiences. The colder months usher in a tranquil ambience, sunny days and crisp evenings. This is a great time to visit historic sites and art galleries and to get a taste of the local culinary scene.
The temperature averages 10-17°C (50-63°F), so it’s not ideal weather for swimming (unless you’re a fan of the Wim Hof method). Keep in mind that some beach bars and oceanfront restaurants may be closed too.
If you choose to visit Sitges during this season, there is one event that you cannot miss. The Sitges Carnival takes place in February and is one of the most famous carnivals in Spain. Expect vibrant parades, wild parties and plenty of flamboyant costumes. Olè!

How to Get Around Sitges
Thanks to its location at the foothills of Garraf Natural Park, Sitges offers an enchanting escape for both mountain and sea aficionados. Its charming old town, four-kilometre promenade and 17 beaches promise plenty of opportunities, and getting around is a cinch.
Catalonia oozes adventure, and whether you want to see the wineries, hidden beaches or forested trails in nature, you won’t be bored. This town is located just 25 kilometres from Barcelona Airport. It’s easy to reach your hotel in Sitges with public transport, thanks to the town’s compact size and excellent infrastructure. Here’s a basic guide to the best transportation options:
Walk
Compared to other major cities in Catalonia, Sitges is a relatively small town. Most of the big attractions and best beaches are within walking distance of each other. Exploring the historic streets of the old town, seeing the beachside promenade and finding the most popular restaurants is a breeze. Quite literally. Just don’t forget to wear comfortable shoes, especially if you’re venturing into the hilly outskirts.
Bike
Pick up the pace on two wheels! Sitges is a bike-friendly town and its scenic promenade is the perfect spot to explore on a bicycle. Head up the trails into Garraf Natural Park or dip in and out of the best beaches along the promenade. You can hire bikes from many rental shops in town. If you plan your Sitges trip during the high season, I’d recommend booking a bike in advance.
Bus
Boarding a bus is ideal if you want to see other towns like Casteldefells, Vilanova i la Geltrú and Barcelona. Frequent services are run by MonBus in Sitges, and the tickets are affordable.
Train
If you plan on staying in Sitges, catching a train won’t be necessary. But, if you want to spend a day out in Catalonia, taking the train is an ideal option. Head to the local Renfe train station and catch the train to nearby cities like Barcelona or Tarragona. Services don’t run 24 hours, so be sure to check the last train time so that you don’t get stranded.
Taxi
Public transport is great, but it’s not always ideal when you’re carrying big bags or lugging around multiple suitcases (we’ve all been there). Taxis are ideal for short trips or if you’re travelling in groups, and they can be found at key locations like the train station. Visiting locations like wineries or Garraf can be done in a taxi, but it can be expensive.
Local Tip: Taxi fares should be metered. Make sure the meter is running when you start your journey, otherwise you may get ripped off.
Car, Scooter or Motorbike Rental
Renting a car, scooter or motorbike in Sitges offers a mix of pros and cons. You’ll have the flexibility to visit areas outside of Sitges, like Garraf or the Penedès wine region. You can set your own schedule and make as many stops as you want. Car rental is convenient for those who like to get off the beaten track.
The only downside is that parking is limited, especially in the city centre. And if you travel during the peak season, it’s best to reserve a rental vehicle in advance.
