15. Hiking

Topped with tremendous treks, sweeping vistas and jagged clifftops, hiking in Tenerife is easily one of the best things to do. Whether you want to conquer the mighty trails, frolic through lush forests or trot along the crashing coastline, there are a handful of hikes to consider.

My personal favourite was the unintentional 6-hour hike we did in Mount Teide. We eagerly pushed through 3 km in less than an hour, passing by the White and Red Mountains. Then, the path became near-vertical as we began to ascend the second half of the trail. By the time we reached 3,320 m of altitude, I wanted to cry, laugh and vomit all at the same time. At one point, we found ourselves free-hand rock climbing and we both said, what the truck? No regrets!

After taking an impromptu 20-minute nap on a rock, we got our asses up and pushed through the last 1.5 km. Mind you, we stopped every 5 minutes to catch our breath. It turns out that asthma, being sick and high altitude don’t mix well together. Who would’ve thought? We ended up making it to 3,550 m altitude, right before my hiking buddy tapped out. Even though it was an absolute mission, I recommend hiking in Mount Teide to every traveller I meet. If you want an experience that pushes you mentally, physically and emotionally, this right here, is it!

If you want to take it easy, I respect that. Not everyone wants to go hardcore while on vacation, and there are many other hikes in Tenerife that don’t involve too much of a challenge. These include the Enchanted Forest El Pijaral, Cunyero Loop and the Barranco del Infierno. Anaga Natural Park offers lush, dense vegetation, so if you want to escape from the summertime heat, this is your best bet.

As a general rule of thumb, October to May is the most suitable time to hike. When compared to the peak season, June to September, this time frame offers more pleasant temperatures.

3. Masca Village

If you’re on the hunt for a stellar stargazing experience, the peak of Masca in the northwest provides a pinnacle point. Only accessible with a 4WD, the trek up is not for the faint-hearted.

Masca was one of the biggest highlights of my time in Tenerife. We rocked up in the late afternoon and watched the sunset paint the scene all shades of cotton-candy-coloured pink. After a big day out hiking, we decided that some chocolate cake would do the trick, and boy did it. The local cafe sits on the cliff’s edge and boasts some of the best views of Masca. If you want to take it slow and soak up the scenery, this is a stellar spot to do so.
