21 Unique Things to do in Barcelona

Barcelona is woven with a world of awe-worthy attractions, from the Sagrada Familia to Casa Batllo. Having lived here for five years, I’ve recently felt the need to dive deeper beyond the surface. Here’s a handful of the most unique things to do in Barcelona, Spain.

Don’t get me wrong, the Sagrada Familia, Park Guell and Casa Batllo are incredible sites to see. Having lived in Barcelona for more than half a decade, I’ve been fortunate enough to experience a huge haul of the city’s highlights.

But having uncovered the slew of sightseeing opportunities, I’ve felt the need to spice things up. Recently, I’ve felt a craving to dive deeper into the dazzling depth of experiences in Catalonia.

Like some sort of innate calling to be entrenched in northeastern Spain’s most enlivening experiences…

So, as the spirited explorer I am, I got stuck into some good old-fashioned investigation.

I came across a series of unique things to do in Barcelona. With everything from pottery classes and sunset sails to helicopter rides and paint and wine workshops, my bucket list for the most unique activities began to grow. Poco a poco.

Among the handful of adrenaline-inducing and alcohol-infused highlights, I stumbled upon a few things that really stood out.

This list is a creative compilation of everything that caught my eye. So, without further ado, here are the most unique things to do in Barcelona, Spain. Vamanos!

21. Sunrise Paddle Boarding

My all-time favourite activity in Barcelona! Paddleboarding at sunrise in Barcelona is one of the best things to do in the summer season and warm months.

Grab your friends, pack your swimsuit and hit the beach bright and early for an experience you won’t forget. If it’s your first time paddle boarding, I’d recommend opting away from La Barceloneta Beach and towards Bogatell Beach. The waves here are usually less strong, making it easier for you to master the board!

20. Teatro Liceu

I only discovered this bad boy recently, and man, did I regret not coming here earlier!

The Gran Teatre del Liceu is one of Catalonia’s most emblematic buildings. This centuries-old theatre is located on the cusp of La Rambla, lain in the beating heart of the city.

The theatre hosts a range of plays, musicals, opera and ballet performances. With more than 170 years of history, you can feel the rich culture that’s woven throughout the venue.

Just last week, I went to Teatro Liceu to watch my roommate perform in an opera show. The sounds, symphonies, and lighting filled my skin with goosebumps as soon as the orchestra began. The red-draped curtains, gold-painted corners and plush seating had me feeling like I was royalty.

If you’re planning a holiday in Barcelona, I’d highly recommend booking tickets to a show. With both local and international acts all year round, you’ll find a variety of experiences for everyone.

19. Banksy Museum

Want to add a little flavour to your vacation in Barcelona? I’ve got the perfect fit for you. Siestas, fiestas and mouth-watering tapas are all the hype, but here’s why you should consider visiting the Banksy Museum Barcelona.

This museum will have you admiring his one-of-a-kind graffiti art. I’ve been a long-time fan, so when I found out that there’s a Banksy Museum in Barcelona, I couldn’t help but squeal with excitement. Literally.

Museu Banksy is as immersive as it gets. From the carefully curated layout to the urban scenography, each corner winds you from one city to the next. As you make your way through the museum, you gain insight into the different phases of his life. It’s hard not to admire his emblematic art and the links with momentous historical events.

Banksy’s artwork challenges standard ideas and his non-confirmative take on life will leave you in a state of contemplation. I walked out of this art museum in Barcelona feeling uplifted and forever grateful for the opportunity. I love all of the traditional museums that are spread throughout the city, but this one in particular is super unique.

18. Montjuic Pool

This is my summertime go-to. Whenever my friends visit Barcelona for a holiday, I always take them to this epic spot. Better yet, it’s not well-known among tourists, so you can really feel like a local here.

The Montjuic Pool, locally known as Piscina Municipal de Montjuïc, is open from the start of July to the first week of September. It’s where the 1992 Summer Olympic Games were hosted but actually dates back to the 1929 Universal Fair.

Don’t get me wrong, there’s nothing better than going to the beach on a hot Spanish summer day. But you can’t beat the views at the Montjuic Pool. There are sun loungers, showers and even a restaurant and bar up the top of the seating area.

I mean, what’s better than overlooking La Sagrada Familia, Barcelona Cathedral, Tibidabo, Torre Agbar and Barceloneta Beach while lounging around?! If you want to get refreshed on your summer vacation in Barcelona, don’t look past this gem!

17. Atelier Madre

Whether you’re a first-time visitor or a seasoned globetrotter, here’s why Atelier Madre deserves a spot at the top of your to-do list.

This isn’t like any other standard shop in Barcelona - it’s a carefully curated space that’s arrayed with awe-inspiring, eco-conscious masterpieces. The meticulous craftsmanship and precise attention to detail are evident, but it’s the one-of-a-kind designs that steal the show.

Personalise pieces with your initials, sweep your lover off their feet on a date, and bring home souvenirs that you definitely can’t find on the typical tourist trail… there are a thousand reasons why this store in Barcelona is worth visiting. Surprisingly, it’s still a hidden gem, and you’ll feel like you stumbled upon gold.

The highlights? The croissant-shaped handbags, the sealife-inspired series and the woven leather bags. Each collection boasts authenticity, and you definitely won’t find anything else like it in Barcelona.

The best part is, everything you’ll find is intentionally created right here in the store. If you’re planning a trip to Spain, be sure to squeeze in a stop at Atelier Madre.

16. La Caseta del Migdia

Let’s get the ball rolling with a true local hot spot. La Caseta del Migdia hugs the heights of the heaving hilltops in Montjuic. And the views will leave you flabbergasted, at the very least. This gem is the perfect summertime hangout, but it’s also pretty pleasant in the autumn and spring months.

Whether you want to swing by for a quick drink or enjoy a bite to eat with friends, La Caseta del Migdia is a must-see. Better yet, it’s mostly known amongst locals, so you won’t have to battle through big crowds and endure long queues. Score!

The menu is quite basic, so don’t go expecting a gourmet meal. Although it sits on the simple end of the scale, you’ll still be able to feast like there’s no tomorrow. On weekends, there’s also live music to amp up the energy! If you want to plan a trip to Barcelona, this experience will undoubtedly be a memorable one.
