Ah, Spain. Mi casa! I’ve been living in Barcelona for over six years. It’s been a wild journey, but daily life lives up to all the hype. The mix of tapas, sun and siestas sprinkles in the perfect amount of fun on the day-to-day. It never gets boring.

I was eager to explore the country when I first arrived in Spain.

I couldn’t wait to jet-set over to the Canary Islands, to visit hot spots in Andalucia or to head over to the nearby Balearic Islands for a quick weekend break.

This European country is crowned with a world of experiences.

But, among all the museums, galleries, castles and ruins, it can be a little overwhelming knowing where to start. Especially if it’s your first time in Spain.

Each season shines a different light on the ever-changing landscapes, ushering in traditional vibrant festivities and culinary delights.

The capital city showcases something completely different to the rest of the country. And when you travel beyond big cities like Madrid and Barcelona, you might even feel like you’re worlds away.

Tucked in the country’s northeastern corner, Barcelona is cemented with Roman ruins, Modernist masterpieces and contemporary hot spots. This city is woven with a world of contrasts, and that’s what makes it one of the best places to visit in Europe. You won’t find Gaudi’s greatest works anywhere else on the continent.

From Picasso’s paintings to Antoni Gaudi’s Sagrada Familia and Casa Batllo, this city oozes art and architectural gems. It’s kind of like a real-life playground, with each corner stretching the imagination.

The maze of diversion is made up of fuming football fans, Catalan culinary culture and fun-packed events that take the city by storm. There’s a slew of unique activities, adrenaline-packed adventures and mesmerising museums to keep everyone entertained, and that’s what makes it one of the best places to visit in Spain with kids.

Seville

If you want to visit Spain, you’re probably feeling inclined towards big cities like Barcelona and Madrid. And rightfully so. But, here’s why you should head down south to Seville.

Southern Spain is famous for flamenco, bullfighting and Hispano-Moorish architectural styles. The Andalusia region is replete with culture and colours, but the vibe you get is truly unmatched.

Seville is one of the best places to visit in Spain for first-timers, especially if you’re interested in culture and cuisine. Whether you want to watch flamenco in a cave or dive deep into the history of Santa Cruz, there are a lot of things to do in Seville, Spain. My personal favourite places to visit in Seville are the Plaza de España and UNESCO-listed Royal Alcázar.

Andalucía’s capital city, Seville, will exceed all of your expectations. And the city practically demands your attention. Stroll through the orange-tree-lined streets, get lost in the labyrinth of laneways in the Old Town and see it all from the Guadalquivir River.

Thanks to the Seville Fair (Feria de Abril), it’s also one of the best places to visit in Spain in April. This lively event takes place over an entire week. The music, gastronomy, dancing and overall atmosphere create a once-in-a-lifetime experience.

The April Fair was originally created as a cattle fair in 1847. Over time, it’s evolved into one of the most culturally significant events on Seville’s social calendar. You’ll find a thousand “casetas” (tents) dotted across the fairground in the Remedios neighbourhood. Admire traditional flamenco dancing and spot the horses parading through the city. Take the kids to the amusement rides (or the big kids too!).

Next up is Spain's capital city, Madrid. Melded with a mix of modern and old, this city is absolutely captivating.

Madrid is home to perfectly manicured parks, delectable food and lively rooftop bars. This is a city that’s filled with contrasting complexities, and for me, that’s what makes it so interesting.

Marvel at the world-class museums, taste jamon iberico in the local markets and sip espresso in the postcard-worthy plazas.

Some of my favourite places to visit include the Royal Palace of Madrid, the Temple of Debod and the Museo Nacional del Prado.

See the Reina Sofia Museum and step inside the Palacio de Cristal, before spending the afternoon for a picnic in El Retiro Park.

Thanks to its vibrant nightlife scene, it’s one of the best places to visit in Spain for young adults. Meet fellow travellers and sip sangria at the rooftop bars, or up the ante and fist-pump the night away in a nightclub.

Walk to the UNESCO-listed Mosque-Cathedral of Córdoba and the ancient Jewish Quarter to get a grip on just how diverse this place is. Visit the Roman Bridge of Cordoba and feel like you’ve stepped back in time. If you’ve got one day in Cordoba, don’t the Alcazar de los Reyes Cristianos.

Tenerife

Tenerife is teeming with untrammelled adventure, adrenaline-packed activities and awe-worthy scenery. This is one of my favourite travel destinations in Spain, and here’s why.

Located in the Canary Islands just off the west coast of Africa, Tenerife is known for its beaches, nightlife and active volcano. This island is home to hilltop-hugging villages and lush mountains, offering a getaway from godsend. The best things to do in Tenerife certainly come in no shortage.

The Canary Islands archipelago hones in on untouched natural splendour. And to be completely honest, it could keep you entertained for months on end. This real-life adventure playground has everything from lava tubes and ancient pyramids to plundering cliffs and fern-filled valleys.

What better way to disconnect than on the Costa del Sol?! Also known as the Sunny Coast, this destination caters to all types of travellers. It’s located in Andalucía, and you can take your pick between luxurious Marbella, rugged Nerja, centrally Benalmadena or Torremolinos.

If you’re a sun-seeker, this Spanish spot is scorching hot. Soak up the scenes from Nerja’s Balcony of Europe or get off the beaten track in Estepona. But, the list of sun-soaked sites isn’t all that’s on offer. February is a month that ushers in exciting events and local festivities.

The Costa del Sol is one of the best places to visit in Spain in February, thanks to the endless list of fun-filled celebrations. Don’t miss Carnival, which takes place in towns like Marbella, Mijas, Fuengirola, Torremolinos and Benalmadena. Mijas is a personal favourite on the Costa del Sol, and it’s worth visiting at any time of the year. But, during February, you can catch it light up for Andalucia Day.

Ronda & Setenil de las Bodegas

If you visit Spain, you might want to get off the beaten path. And these two destinations are seriously underrated. While they’re not located close together, they’re both situated in the Andalucia region.

Ronda and Setenil de las Bodegas are lapped with landscapes that are sure to leave an imprint. These corners of Southern Spain invite you into the character-packed cave towns and cliff-hanging villages. Not only is this part of Spain steeped deep in history, but it’s a great way to mix things up.

Sitting on the cusp of a vertical canyon, Ronda is filled with maze-like streets, an ancient bullring and the emblematic bridge, el Puente Nuevo. This place in Spain is known for its deep-rooted traditions, cobbled Old Quarter and centuries-old Arab Baths. Visit the Moorish King’s Palace, pop into Mondragon Palace and soak up the ambience in Plaza Durquesa de Parcent. Whatever you choose to do, just don’t leave without trying some fresh gazpacho soup in the old town.

Setenil de las Bodegas is carved into the towering clifftop. To be completely honest, arriving here is quite a mission. You have to drive through winding roads and tight spaces, so it’s not easy if you’re a nervous driver. That said, this quaint village is worth visiting. Admire the whitewashed houses, hilltop castles and verdant vineyards, before seeing the Ruins of Acinipo & Torreón del Homenaje.

Both Ronda and Setenil de las Bodegas are great places to visit in Spain for first-timers. They are off the beaten track, so you won’t be battling through big crowds like in Barcelona or Madrid. Getting there can be challenging, so I’d recommend booking an organised tour to take the stress out of your trip.

Mallorca

Mallorca acts as a mecca for all things Mediterranean. Whether you're on the hunt for a mountain hideaway or a soul-filled staycation, there are ample finds on this Balearic Island.

Mallorca is known for its culture, historical landmarks and sunny beaches. Whether you want to hike in the Sierra de Tramuntana, snorkel in the crystal clear waters or taste the medley of Mediterranean cuisine, Mallorca is a must-see destination.

Best Time to Visit Spain

Although it’s pretty much a year-round destination, the most ideal time to visit Spain is during the shoulder seasons of April, May and early June or late September and October.

These off-peak periods offer budget-friendly rates on accommodation, transport, airfares and activities. With far fewer crowds and pleasant weather, this is the ideal time to plan your vacation in Spain.

If you want to enjoy a summertime getaway, July and August boast the hottest temperatures for a beach holiday. But, I’d avoid doing touristy things in the big cities. For example, the summertime is not the best time to visit the Sagrada Familia. The swarms of tourists hurdling in, one after another, take any from the magic of the experience. And the same goes for all major attractions in Madrid and Barcelona.

 

How to Get Around Spain

Master getting around on your first time in Spain with this tried-and-tested guide. The country is well-connected with buses, trains, airports and driving routes. No matter what time of year you choose to visit, you’ll be able to find an option that’s fit for you.

Spain is home to a well-developed train network, with plenty of fast and frequent options.

High-speed trains run in big cities like Seville, Barcelona, Madrid and Granada in Spain and the national train service is Renfe.

If you’re planning a multi-destination train trip, European residents can buy an Interrail pass, and non-European residents can purchase a Eurail pass. Before you book anything, make sure you compare all your options using Omio and Trainline.

Bus

Buses in Spain are the best option for budget travellers and backpackers.

Although it's not the most time-efficient way of getting around, you'll be able to explore both big cities and smaller towns. Flixbus and ALSA are the local picks in Spain and you can compare various options using Busbud.

Aeroplane

Catching a flight is the fastest way of getting around, but before you book, compare times and prices using Skyscanner.

If you’re a budget traveller, make sure you book at least 2 to 4 months in advance! You can also use Compensair if your flight gets cancelled or delayed for more than 3 hours.  

Car

Renting a car in Spain is ideal if you want to have full freedom of the experience. You'll have plenty of time to mosey through the myriad attractions, activities and hidden gems on offer. Plus, you won't be restrained to transport timetables and tour groups. This option does take longer than catching a train or flight.
